What Are IUDs?

An IUD (Intrauterine Device) is a small, T-shaped device inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It is a highly effective form of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC).

IUDs are among the most reliable birth control methods available. They can remain in place for up to 5 years but can be removed at any time if a woman decides she wants to conceive.

In Korea, there are two main types of IUDs:

  1. Hormonal IUD: Releases hormones to prevent pregnancy.
  2. Copper IUD: Non-hormonal, uses copper to prevent pregnancy.

Types of IUDs in Korea:

Copper IUD

The Copper Intrauterine Device (IUD), also known as the Copper Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (IUCD), is a highly effective and reliable contraception option available in Singapore. It is over 99% effective in preventing unwanted pregnancies.

Overview: The Copper IUD is a form of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) that can remain in place for up to 5 years. It is a small, T-shaped device inserted into the womb to prevent pregnancy.

How It Works:

  1. Preventing Fertilization and Implantation: The presence of the Copper IUD in the uterine cavity inhibits fertilization and prevents the implantation of fertilized eggs.
  2. Releasing Copper Ions: The device releases copper ions, which are spermicidal and create an unfavorable environment for sperm. This dual action helps prevent fertilization after sexual intercourse.

Suitability:

  • Suitable for women who wish to delay pregnancy for several years and prefer a non-hormonal contraceptive method.
  • Can be used by both women who have given birth before and those who haven't, including those who have only had a cesarean section.
  • Ideal for women who cannot use hormonal contraceptives due to health reasons or personal preference.

Considerations:

  • Not Suitable for Everyone: Women with severe menstrual issues, certain uterine conditions (e.g., large fibroids, bicornuate uterus), or untreated sexually transmitted infections may not be suitable candidates.
  • Procedure and Side Effects: Insertion is a simple procedure performed in a women's health clinic, typically during menstruation for optimal comfort and success. It may cause temporary discomfort and cramping. Common side effects include heavier menstrual periods and increased cramps.
  • Removal: The Copper IUD can be removed at any time by a healthcare provider if the woman decides to conceive or if the device needs replacement after 5 years.

Pros and Cons:

  • Pros: Highly effective, long-term contraception without hormones, reversible, and convenient once inserted.
  • Cons: Requires a minor procedure for insertion, may cause increased menstrual discomfort for some women.

Hormonal IUD

The Hormonal Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (IUD or IUCD) is a type of IUD that releases hormones to prevent pregnancy for up to 5 years.

Overview: The Hormonal IUD is one of the most effective forms of long-term contraception, with a success rate of at least 99.8% in preventing pregnancy. It consists of a small, plastic T-shaped device placed inside the womb.

How It Works:

  • Hormone Release: The Hormonal IUD contains Levonorgestrel, a type of progesterone hormone, which prevents pregnancy by thickening cervical mucus, inhibiting sperm movement, and thinning the uterine lining.
  • Effectiveness: It is highly effective due to its continuous hormone release, ensuring minimal chance of pregnancy.

Suitability:

  • Suitable for women seeking long-term contraception without daily maintenance.
  • Safe for both women who have given birth and those who haven't, including those who have had cesarean sections.
  • Effective in treating conditions like heavy or painful menstrual periods (menorrhagia or dysmenorrhea).

Considerations:

  • Not Suitable for Everyone: Women with certain uterine conditions (e.g., large fibroids, bicornuate uterus) or who cannot use hormonal contraception may not be candidates.
  • Procedure and Side Effects: Insertion is a straightforward procedure performed in a clinic setting, typically during menstruation for comfort. Common side effects include irregular bleeding or spotting initially, which may improve over time.

Removal and Pros/Cons:

  • Removal: Can be removed at any time by a healthcare provider if pregnancy is desired or after 5 years.
  • Pros: Long-term effectiveness, minimal maintenance, and potential improvement in menstrual symptoms.
  • Cons: Requires a procedure for insertion, which may cause temporary discomfort.

IUD Cost in Korea

The cost of obtaining an IUD in Korea can vary based on several factors:

Type of IUD: Whether it's a Copper IUD or Hormonal IUD will influence the initial cost.

Required Tests: Depending on the type of IUD and your medical history, there may be tests needed before and after the procedure.

Doctor's Expertise: The experience and skill of the doctor performing the insertion or removal can affect costs.

While the upfront cost of IUD insertion in Korea may be higher compared to monthly birth control pills, it is cost-effective over time because the device lasts up to 5 years.

Insertion Cost

The cost of IUD insertion typically includes:

  • Cost of the IUD device
  • Doctor's procedural and consultation fees
  • Pre-procedure tests and follow-up checks

Although the initial total may seem higher, the monthly cost of an IUD is lower than that of purchasing monthly birth control pills.

Removal Costs

The cost of IUD removal is generally less than insertion and typically includes:

  • Doctor's procedural fee for removal
  • Consultation fees

The complexity of removal can influence costs. Routine removals are usually performed in a clinic setting at a reasonable price. However, more complex cases might require hospital facilities, incurring higher costs.

Choosing an experienced doctor for both insertion and removal procedures can ensure smooth and effective management of your contraceptive needs.
